Learning Objectives:
- Provide an update on the clinical aspects of herpes zoster (HZ) and vaccine options.
- Examine the clinical evidence for immunization against HZ, the impact of vaccination, including evidence and outcomes.
- Review applicable guidelines on the use of RZV vaccine on persons aged 50 and older, and who are immunocompetent.
- Identify patients eligible for the vaccine, including an overview of vaccine (administration, dosing, schedule, contraindications, components, special considerations, adverse effects).
- Review Health Canada approved indications for RZV vaccine.
- Discuss future landscape of zoster vaccination & applicable counseling points for the pharmacist.
About the speaker
Cindy Chen is a graduate of UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and has been a practicing community pharmacist for 10 years, working in rural and urban communities around B.C. She has practiced as a C.D.E. in community, a Clinical Skills Lab instructor at UBC, and has been a licensed injections pharmacist since program inception in 2009. In addition, Cindy has been the expert reviewer for injections training programs for pharmacists at University of Manitoba and University of Saskatchewan, and involved in development of various training programs for pharmacists in B.C. Currently, the Clinical Practice Lead pharmacist at Heart Pharmacy Group based in Victoria, Cindy develops programs for public learning and pharmacists' development of clinical knowledge and skills, when she is not enjoying seaside walks and playing in the ocean.
