Shingles, also called herpes zoster, caused by the same virus as chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus, is a disease that triggers a painful skin rash. Join Dr. Siraj as he provides a background in shingles disease and prevalence, discuss shingles management and treatment, patient eligibility for herpes zoster vaccination, review current NACI guidelines, efficacy, safety and long-term protection of herpes zoster vaccination, improve your workflow to increase immunization without increasing workload, and discuss how to use minor ailment as a treatment for shingles.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, pharmacists will be better able to:

  • To provide a background in shingles disease and prevalence. 
  • To discuss shingles management and treatment. 
  • To identify eligible patients (healthy and immunocompromised) for the herpes zoster vaccination. 
  • To review the current NACI guidelines, efficacy, safety, and long-term protection of herpes zoster vaccination. 
  • To discuss workflows to increase immunizations without increasing workload.
  • Use minor ailment as a treatment for shingles

About the Speaker: Dr. Fairuz Siraj, PharmD, CDE

Dr. Fairuz Siraj is a 2019 doctor of pharmacy graduate from the University of British Columbia. Now a certified diabetes educator and staff pharmacist at Pharmasave in Victoria BC, Fairuz empowers patients through personalized diabetes and migraine consultation services. He's a recipient of the 2021 BC Pharmacy Association New Practitioner Award and the 2022 Pharmacy Practice and Business Rising Star Award. Collaborating with organizations like Migraine Canada and local healthcare professionals, he is dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes in chronic disease management. Fairuz also enjoys teaching and is committed to advancing the pharmacy profession's impact on patient care
